Importing InDesign Designs into Pixul AI

Modified on Tue, 1 Apr at 10:45 AM

Since Adobe InDesign does not natively support SVG exports, you’ll need to first export your design in a format compatible with Illustrator, then convert it to SVG before importing it into Pixul AI.

A Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Open Your InDesign File

  1. Launch Adobe InDesign.

  2. Open the file you want to export.

Step 2: Export as Adobe PDF (Print Format)

  1. Click on File at the top-left corner and select Export.

  2. In the dialog box that appears, choose Adobe PDF (Print) as the file format and click Save.

  3. Another dialog box will open with export options. In the Adobe PDF Preset dropdown, select High-Quality Print.

  4. Click Export to save your PDF file.

Step 3: Open the PDF in Illustrator

  1. Open Adobe Illustrator.

  2. Click on File → Open.

  3. Select the PDF file you just exported from InDesign and click Open.

Step 4: Set All Text Tracking to Zero

  1. To ensure that Pixul AI renders text correctly, all letter spacing (tracking) must be set to 0. If tracking is not reset, text appearance may break.

  2. You can manually adjust tracking for all text layers:

    • Select the Text Tool and highlight each text element.

    • Open the Character Panel and set Tracking (letter spacing) to 0

  3. Alternatively, you can use the provided Illustrator script to automate this:

    • Click on File → Scripts → Other Scripts.

    • Select the provided script and run it. Download Script

  4. Review the document and make any necessary adjustments.

Step 5: Export Your Design as an SVG

  1. Click on File → Save a Copy.

  2. In the file format dropdown, select SVG, rename the file if needed, and click Save.

  3. A dialog box will appear—apply the following SVG export settings:

    • SVG Profiles: SVG 1.1

    • Fonts Type: SVG

    • Subsetting: None (Use System Fonts)

    • Image Location: Embed

    • CSS Properties: Presentation Attributes

    • Decimal Places: 3

    • Encoding: Unicode (UTF-8)

    • ✅ Check Output fewer <tspan> elements

    • ✅ Check Use <textPath> element for Text on Path

    • ❌ Uncheck Responsive

    • ❌ Uncheck Include Slicing Data

    • ❌ Uncheck Include XMP

  4. Click OK and save your SVG file.

Step 6: Upload SVG to Pixul AI

  1. Log in to your Pixul AI account.

  2. Click Create New Design to open the Pixul AI Editor.

  3. Click Import SVG and select your exported SVG file.

  4. Review your design and make any final adjustments.

    • Note: Text box widths may vary due to font size differences—adjust them as needed to maintain a clean layout.

Notes:

  • Some text or shapes with gradient colors may not import properly or may become uneditable. You may need to recreate them manually within the Pixul AI editor.

  • Always verify the final design after import to ensure everything appears as expected.
